Pasture & Wildlife Plant Identification Contest

Since 1979, Trinity-Neches SWCD has hosted an annual Pasture & Wildlife Plant Identification Contest in September. Over 100 individuals from local area 4-H and FFA chapters come together at the Trinity Valley Community College Ranch & Rodeo Arena to be tested on their knowledge of 25 selected plants, from a list of 50, found in East Texas. While only 25 count towards the contest, all 50 plants are present for further practice. Participants are evaluated on their ability to identify the plant, determine its status as native or introduced, annual or perennial, cool or warm season, as well as its degree of value to grazing and wildlife. The top three teams are awarded plaques, with the highest scoring high school senior earning a $600 scholarship.
